Genesis Basics: Glaze Lips and
Nails
Most
reborn artists choose to add a bit of shine to parts of the doll that
might appear wet or shiny: the lips, eyes or eyelids, inner ears,
nostrils, and nails. Several products can be used to achieve
this. My favorite is Genesis Air-Dry Satin Varnish, available
from Bountiful
Baby. Genesis provides a light sheen with one coat or a
strong shine with multiple coats.
For your first doll, you might wish to use Aleene's Paper Glaze, which
can be found at most stores that carry scrapbooking supplies.
Paper Glaze can also be used for realistic looking tears.
Note: Never subject air dry products to heat. If using a rice sock for
softening during rooting, you may wish to wait to apply air dry glosses
until the rooting is finished.

Stir
the Genesis Gloss Varnish with a toothpick before using. After
your vinyl parts are completely cool, use a small
brush to apply glaze to areas that should appear shiny. On my Berenguer
newborn, I glazed the lips and tongue, inner ears, nostrils, eyelids,
and the
finger and toenails. Use one layer for moderate shine and two or more
for strong shine (for the inside of the mouth, for example.)
Apply air dry glazes only after the vinyl is completely painted and
cooled. Even moderate heat (like from your rice sock during rooting)
can make the varnish sticky.

Allow the glaze to dry
completely. Now we can start adding hair to our baby. The painting
process is complete!
