Genesis Basics: Protective
Layer
This step is recommended but
not essential.
In our last baking step, we'll be applying a thin layer of varnish to
protect our painting. Genesis Matte Varnish is a must-have item in your
reborning arsenal. It serves several functions: It protects our painted
layers from UV and friction, removes any residual shine from the vinyl,
and creates a realistic looking skin texture.

Using the palette knife, scoop 1 -1 1/2 tablespoons of varnish onto
your paint tray. Add enough thinner to make the varnish easy to spread.
The thinned varnish should be roughly the consistency of Elmer's glue.

Using
a clean cosmetic sponge, dip into the varnish and apply to all the
vinyl parts with a pouncing motion, leaving some texture.

Bake
the vinyl parts for 8 minutes at 265 degrees. Remove from the oven and
flip the pieces over. Bake for an additional minute. Once set, Genesis
Matte Varnish should have a slightly rough texture. If any parts look
chalky or feel sticky to the touch, return to the oven and bake at 1
minute intervals until thoroughly set.
When varnishing, correct oven temperature is essential. A cool oven
will not set the varnish completely, and a hot oven will over heat the
vinyl. I strongly recommend using an accurate oven thermometer for all
paint setting.
