Basics: Depth Layer
In
this layer we'll add depth to areas of thin skin. Using
straight pthalo blue, mix the
paint to a VERY thin consistency, like water. This layer must
be
done every bit as carefully as our purple wash; applying too dark will
make our baby look bruised.

Dampen the edge of a sponge
with thinner, and dampen a brush with blue. Blot off the
excess on a paper towel.
On the hands, add a hint of
blue to the inner wrist, the center palm of
the hand, and the inner elbow and blend well. Use
the edge
of the sponge to remove some paint if it appears too heavy.
I usually follow my vein lines with a little blue as well.
(Photos show unblended paint.)

On
the legs, use the same process to add areas of thin skin behind the
knee, on the inner and outer ankle, and the center bottom of the foot.

On the head, add the blue tone
behind the ears, under the lip, around
the nose, between the eyes, on the eyelids, and on the temples.
Tread lightly
here, especially on the areas between the eyes and around the nose.

Check
for any areas that are too blue and blend them out with thinner.
After you're satisfied with your details, it's time to bake
again. The result of this step should be subtle, but when done
correctly it adds a great deal of realism to your baby's skin tone.
